Born in the Dominican Republic in 1932, Oscar de la Renta left his country at 18 to study painting in Spain before ultimately falling in love with the world of fashion. Using his skills as an artist, he became an apprentice with Cristobal Balenciaga, a famous couturier. Early in the 1960s, he was hired at Lanvin-Castillo — his first fashion job. He quickly rose through the ranks of the industry, falling in love with the editor-in-chief of French Vogue and marrying her in 1967. While his clothing line was often said to be affordable only by women of means, de la Renta also released a perfume to share his innovative creations with everyone. He was president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America from 1973-1976, and 1986-1988.
