Born in Northwest England, Stephen Jones was raised to appreciate art, and it was a visit to London’s Victoria & Albert museum that inspired him to become a fashion artist. He trained at the St. Martin’s School of Art, the only male student in the program that year. Jones soon discovered a knack for hat making and moved to the millinery room after ‘auditioning’ by creating a hat for the department head, Shirley Hex. In the following years, he became actively involved in the New Wave movement and began regularly attending the Blitz nightclub in Covent Garden, making outrageous hat creations for his friends to wear. By 1982, he was making headpieces for Princess Diana and being commissioned by the Victoria & Albert to make a piece for their collection. His works are proudly sold by luxury stores in every corner of the world.
